Description
Character History
Zaria was born the third of six children in a very mismatched family. Her mother, Jessica, never married and instead casually slept with men of varying levels of importance and connection. A lot of her struggles relate back to the fact that they only had a partially-present mother available to them, leaving the girls to raise each other.
Zaria's first few years were quiet and calm, with both Trisha and May at home with her - along with her mother being present. Once Trisha went to Hogwarts, however, was when it started to move downhill. Marion often left May in charge of Zaria, and she would be absent from home for long periods of time during the day. May did her best to teach Zaria basic arithmetic and writing skills, doing a passable job.
When Zaria was five and May was nine, Marion had Amy, who was often left in the care of her older sisters. By this point, Trisha was in Hogwarts and Zaria and May stopped counting her as a 'full sister', because she wasn't there to help. Two years later, during May's first year at Hogwarts, Felicity was born. Within a year of her birth, seven-year-old Zaria was often left to babysit a toddler and an infant while her mother was out. As a result of this, Zaria quickly began to resent her mother, Trisha, and to a lesser extent May, as she quickly became aware of the fact that other children her age were allowed to play at the park and play with friends while she babysat.
The situation repeated itself when Zaria was nine, when Mia was born. As she was older at that point, she was frequently left with all three girls for longer hours.
Zaria treated Hogwarts as an escape, when she finally was able to attend. Leaving home and her younger sisters was a blessing to her, especially since May was only in her fourth year, which gave her some company. Due to her babysitting duties, Zaria had no childhood friends and was certainly the odd person out when she was Sorted into Slytherin.
Quiet and timid from the start, Zaria kept her head down and didn't go out of her way to make friends. She treated all of the people in her year decently, and just focused on finishing her work - it was a struggle for her, originally, due to somewhat weaker penmanship and mathematical skills. Her roommate, Maggie Parkinson, spent many hours helping her improve her quality of work over both her first and second year.
Her hard work in schooling paid off, when she was handed the Prefectship in fifth year. Soon afterwards, in her sixth year, she gathered up her courage and tried out for the Slytherin Quidditch team, and landed a spot as a starting Chaser for the next two years. She had often played at home on slower brooms, first with May and then teaching her sisters how to ride, so it seemed only natural that she drifted towards participating. It was only during these last few years of her schooling that Zaria realized she had nurtured several friendships and actually started enjoying actually being in school, instead of simply treating it as a vacation from her sisters and mother.
Upon leaving school, Zaria took a Ministry job and did her best to balance the few friendships she had left with assisting in raising her sisters. She drifted closer to Lille, in terms of friendships, and found herself highly pressured to marry herself off and settle down to have children. In a moment of panic and unable to consult with anyone due to Aggie's disappearance and Severus's reluctance to have a real discussion, she turned to Martin Avery, a relatively close friend, and they planted the idea that they would have a fake engagement and eventually call it off.
When Martin was arrested, Zaria was still officially engaged to him and it created a larger mess than anyone had expected. Once he was released, they spent several months unsure of each other, and just as Zaria started to strongly consider ending their arrangement, Martin suggested they elope and they did so, as of January 1982.
