Character History

Logan MacCaw is Scottish by birth, and his accent shows it. He was born to two relatively happily married Muggles on the day after Valentine's Day in 1962. His father was working for the oil refinery company in Grangemouth, and his mother had quit working as a nurse in order to raise him. More than a year later, he was joined by his brother, Ethan.

Logan showed his first signs of magic at the age of five when he adjusted the temperature in the house according to his personal preference. In retrospect, his parents don't quite know how long he had been controlling the temperature in the house, but his mother remembers watching the thermostat move from 21 to 27 degrees Celsius (70 to 80 degrees Fahrenheit).

Max and Judy MacCaw's marriage dissolved soon after it became clear that both Logan and Ethan MacCaw were strange children. Max blamed Judy for the children's abnormality. With him he took his money and the boys' financial security. The boys and their mother moved into a flat in Falkirk, where Judy found work as a nurse in the emergency room at the Falkirk and District Royal Infirmary. The boys transferred schools and were forced to adjust to a lifestyle different than what they were accustomed to. Logan and Ethan were left to their own devices in the evenings while their mother worked. Logan took the responsibilities around the house that were typically relegated to their mother - he cooked, cleaned, and made sure that he and Ethan had everything they needed for school.

Their father, meanwhile, remarried and soon had his first daughter, Ashley MacCaw.

Everything changed when Logan received his Hogwarts letter. The boys were divided for the first time, and Logan had to leave his mother and his brother behind to go to Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry. It was there that he was Sorted into Ravenclaw. After it became clear that Daniel Mulciber and Victor Stanton already had best friends, he made friends with the quiet and otherwise unobtrusive Chad Poke.

Logan's first impression of Chad was that Chad was far too nerdy to possibly be a friend of Logan's, but Logan soon found the wizarding world to be more than he expected and took comfort in having a halfblooded friend. Chad likely saved Logan from a number of unpleasant scuffles with the Slytherin boys of 1980; Chad told him who to talk to and who to avoid and helped him to understand the wizarding world. The reality of Chad's situation - a father who had been tortured into insanity by the Death Eaters - made the war very real to Logan, and that anxiety (or perhaps paranoia) has colored his experiences throughout Hogwarts. When Chad's brother Garman came to Hogwarts with the class of 1981, Logan befriended him, as well.

Logan sent owls home every day during his first two years of Hogwarts until finally he was joined by his brother, Ethan. Now that Logan is out of school and Ethan is still in it, Logan once again sends daily owls.

Logan, who was a popular student at his Muggle school in Falkirk, understands the implications of his Muggleborn status and now opts to hang in the background. He values his friendships and his family relationships; he cares about the people around him. He will do whatever he can to stay safe and survive the war, although he expects to die at any moment. His work ethic and dedication to his studies at school were influenced by his friendship with Chad. Chad was always the more studious of the two, and eventually Chad's good habits rubbed off on Logan. Logan would probably be more of an arse if he hadn't made such a nice friend - he doesn't necessarily know what his values are or what he stands for, he just knows who his family are and who he cares for. He's a natural salesman, he's easy to talk to and likes to think he's easy to get along with. He will always defer to Chad's opinion, even if he is thinking the exact opposite, because Chad knows best.

Logan MacCaw was the first of 1980 to identify Jane Murray as a professional actress. He can not tell you how frustrating it was to know her the first time he saw her and not have anyone to talk to about it. It probably did not take him long to tell Chad about how famous Jane was, and it took him another three weeks to get up the nerve to talk to her.
