Character History

When Chad Poke first came into being, he told me that he was always being confused for someone else. If he wasn't being confused for his brother Garman, who resembles him so strongly that they could be twins, he was being confused for his best friend, Logan MacCaw. He said that it used to bother him, but by his seventh year, he just accepted it as the way things were. He's happy to be associated with people like his brother and the MacCaws. He has strong opinions about most things, but he only shares them with the people he trusts.

He has a strong magical legacy on his father's side, but he is much more in tune with his Muggle mother and his Muggle upbringing. His father, Hit Wizard Andrew Poke, was tortured into insanity by the Death Eaters when he refused to cooperate with them on 12 December 1970. He currently resides in the Janus Thickey Ward at St Mungo's. Chad was only eight years old at the time of his father's tragedy, and he has more memories of his father's current state than his previous state.

Chad's mother, who had been staying home to raise the boys, went back to work and works as a nurse in the hospital in Alderney. Chad and Garman, only a year apart, fought a lot as children and competed for everything in the house. After their father was tortured and their mother returned to work, Chad and Garman were left at home alone after school. The boys got along best when they were reading, and they always competed for who could do better in their lessons and who could read their books faster. Chad and Garman fended for themselves for food, which resulted in them eating a lot of cereal and, on several occasions, eating raw noodles. Chad always exerted himself as the Older Brother in spite of their closeness in age.

When Chad went to Hogwarts, it was almost a relief for the Poke household. Chad was Sorted into Ravenclaw, and the year away from his brother was enough for him to appreciate his little brother a little more than he had. Chad Poke stood in the Sorting Line between Lisa Podmore and Valkyrie Rowle. Naturally, Lisa and Chad clung to each other, and that is where Chad found his first friend. They were Sorted into Ravenclaw together, and neither talked to anyone else for the first week of school.

After that first week, Logan MacCaw sat at the Ravenclaw lunch table next to Chad and instantly started a conversation. Logan talked a mile a minute - he apparently had not spoken to anyone since being rejected by Daniel Mulciber, and silence suited Chad much better than it had Logan. It became clear to Chad that Logan was a Muggleborn, and Chad explained everything that he knew about the wizarding world to Logan. While Chad's studiousness, dedication to his studies, and nerdiness rubbed off on Logan, Logan's personality, sociability, and sense of humor rubbed off on Chad. Neither boy noticed the influence that they had on each other, but both were grateful to have a friend in their dormitory. To this day, they don't know how their friendship has influenced each of them - they simply haven't thought about it. Chad was surprised by the strong relationship between Logan and Ethan MacCaw, and watching Logan loyally write to Ethan every day led Chad to write regular letters to Garman.

When Garman came to Hogwarts and was Sorted into Ravenclaw, his relationship with Chad had drastically improved. The boys have the same understanding of who they are and where they come from. The closest thing the boys had to a male role model after their father was tortured was their uncle, Addison Poke, who could occasionally be seen around the Poke household, kind of like a recurring guest star on a sitcom. He was more the cool uncle than anyone who took responsibility for the kids' upbringing.

Chad studied hard and got good marks at Hogwarts, but as the end of his seventh year approached, he understood that he could easily be murdered by the Death Eaters. He forgets that he has a magical last name and identifies strongly with the Muggleborn plight. Especially after the death of [Brion McKinnon], he knew that he could easily be killed by the Death Eaters at any time. He took a job in Accounting with Witch Weekly and does everything he can to keep the people in his life safe.

Chad has a dry sense of humor, he likes things that are ironic, and he says that he is less of a nerd than his brother Garman, but that is probably only because his best friend is Logan. Chad really wants this war to end so that he can get a better job.

Andrew Poke was tortured early in the war, but the Death Eaters used him as an example to the wizarding world. It is likely that the older generation remembers his torture more than the younger generation, but it was publicized in The Daily Prophet.
